Public speaking techniques for corporate leaders have evolved far beyond memorizing a script or reciting slides. In high-stakes environments, your presence is also evaluated not just by the words you speak, but also the gestures you make and persona you carry.

Whether you're leading a board meeting, addressing stakeholders, or presenting to your team, the way you command shapes how others see your competence and authority.

In this blog, we cover techniques that are grounded in our decades of experience, human psychology, and executive coaching.

Here are 7 public speaking techniques for corporate leaders:

Start with a Strong Opening

Begin with a compelling story, a surprising fact, or a provocative question. This lets you capture attention and set the tone for your message. It also helps you to ease out and boosts confidence as you proceed.

A powerful opening not only engages your audience but also boosts your confidence as you proceed. Research says that a well-rehearsed introduction can significantly reduce speaker anxiety and enhance audience engagement.

Maintain Purposeful Eye Contact

This technique creates a sense of connection and makes each person feel addressed. Make eye contact with one person for a couple seconds at a time. You aren't speaking to everyone, you are speaking to one person at a time.

Utilize the "TruthPlane" Gesture

Body language expert Mark Bowden recommends using open palm gestures at navel height, known as the "TruthPlane," to convey trust and confidence. It’s a nonverbal cue that enhances your credibility and makes your message more persuasive.

Employ Strategic Pauses

Incorporate deliberate pauses to emphasize key points and allow your audience to absorb information. It’ll help them understand you better and also for you to collect your thoughts and make the next comments.

Use Storytelling to Illustrate Points

Narratives can make complex ideas more relatable and memorable. When delivering a speech or talking to your team, think of stories as illustrations. People are more likely to remember stories than abstract concepts or statistics.

Practice Extemporaneous Speaking

Prepare thoroughly but deliver your speech in a conversational manner without reading from a script. This approach, known as extemporaneous speaking, allows for flexibility and responsiveness to audience reactions. This, incorporated with strategic pauses, can make your delivery more natural and engaging.

Incorporate the "Speaker's Triangle"

Physically move to different points on the stage to signify transitions between main points. This movement, often referred to as the "Speaker's Triangle," can help organize your speech and keep the audience visually engaged. Work with the organizer beforehand to ensure the microphone isn’t attached to a stand and can move with you.

Prepare for Technical Difficulties

Even the most seasoned speakers can be derailed by a frozen slide deck, a dead microphone, or a video that refuses to play. Keep a printed version of your key points, or memorize your main transitions and examples so you can continue without relying on slides.

Engage with the Audience Before Speaking

Arrive early to greet attendees and establish rapport. Audiences will be more receptive to your message once they get to know you informally. It also gives you ample time to double-check connections and familiarize yourself with the room setup.

Conclude with a Clear Call to Action

End your presentation by summarizing key points and providing a specific call to action. A strong conclusion reinforces your message and guides the audience on the next steps.
